Rotring 600 Mechanical Pencil
![]() The design of the Rotring 600 focuses on mechanical utility and simplicity. This pencil is primarily a tool, with the beauty and clean lines of good, precision manufactured tools. It is heavy, yet the combination of the weight and balance with the hexagonal design makes it easy to hold the pencil steady and level. The Rotring 600 pencil looks like something designed for technical drawing - it looks like an old style drafting instrument. The surface is a black matte finish. The grip is knurled, for steadier holding. (The newer, 'Newton' version of the Rotring 600 looks more contemporary with a smoother, polished contour gripping surface. For some people, it's more comfortable to hold, but it does not give as firm a grip as this original design.) The original Rotring 600 mechanical pencil has two distinct differences from most mechanical pencils: The lead channel (the tube at the writing end of the pencil) is much longer than most mechanical pencils - 4mm, which makes it much more difficult to break the lead, at least inside the pencil. This makes it possible to apply more pressure and create a wider range of marks. Another distinctive feature is an adjustable band at the top of the pencil that you can turn to indicate the hardness of the lead.
